The Whiting Spey Hackle Hen Saddle feathers are specially developed for tying Spey and Dee flies, which require unique feather types to create their distinctive swept-back profiles and flowing movements in fast water. Originally, these flies were tied using feathers from 'Spey Cock' roosters native to Scotland's Spey River Valley; however, this stock became scarce in the early 20th century. Heron feathers later became popular substitutes, but due to legal protections, alternative sources were sought.

After extensive genetic selection, Whiting developed a "genetic" Spey Hackle breed that offers feathers with long, strong barbs, no webbing, resilience against brittleness, and excellent density—ideal for fly tying. This selection includes a pure white variety perfect for dyeing and multiple other colors and patterns to inspire fly tiers. The feathers are quite uniform in smaller to medium sizes, perfect for small to medium streamers, sea trout, and salmon flies. They can be used as front or palmer hackles in fly patterns.
