Guide to fishing in Varde River

Fishing in Varde River is becoming more and more popular - and for good reason.

Countless volunteer hours have been put into getting the salmon back into the system.

It is now, and the fishing is excellent. Unfortunately, the system is often overlooked, in relation to both Skjern Å and Storåen.

The fishery is the epitome of Danish salmon fishing, you can easily do it with one-handed and switch fly rods .

In addition, the system offers many other exciting fishing activities, including dry fly fishing.

Watch our video about Varde River below, and read on to get ready for fishing in Varde River.

Salmon fishing in Varde River

As with all other salmon fishing in Denmark, it is a fishery that rewards perseverance.

Those who know the stream best are also those who catch the most fish.

There are some differences in the gear used. When fishing for salmon in the Varde River, one-handed fly rods and lighter two-handed rods are often used.

The river is narrower than many of the Danish salmon rivers.

Remember that there are salmon in the entire Varde å system

You may have experienced it before, or heard someone by the river say it:

Salmon migrate far up the Danish rivers, in fact, if the water has risen to the salmon premiere, many fish will be caught in the upper reaches of the Danish salmon rivers.

That actually applies to all of them.

The river is constantly changing.

Varde River is approximately 40 kilometers long and 2 meters deep on average.

The river has a "new" and an old course, which together constitute the many zones for which you can buy day passes .

In some stretches, quite a lot of crayfish have arrived, which means that the banks are quickly undermined and can collapse. It also means that the fish's positions will always change.

The system also includes Ansager and Holme å, which also offer excellent fishing. Up here, there is also fantastic dry fly fishing for brown trout as well as brook trout.

Remember to take good care of these fish! - We cannot recommend a fishing net with rubber meshes enough.

Don't hide your salmon flies too far away when you go up to these streams, as the salmon migrate all the way up these smaller streams.

Pay attention to the signage.

Unfortunately, fishing is more dispersed than it used to be, as private consortia have acquired larger and larger parts of the river's water.

This means that you must keep an eye on the signage and pay attention to the association's rules .

Fishing continues to improve

The river has had a good fall, with the removal of a weir. This also means that salmon and sea trout have even more potential resting places and spawning areas.

Hopefully, the Varde and Grindsted associations will be in possession of this fantastic fishing water for the next many, many years. With such good fishing, it has become sought after by private consortia to purchase the water.

Catch a salmon in Varde River

If you fish for salmon in the Varde River, a sinking line is necessary.

Many Skagit lines are perfect for this fishing, as the lump is short and there are many good options for changing tips .

Therefore, we recommend using switch or two-handed rods rather than one-handed rods.

The selection of good sinking lines is simply larger.

Read the water

Wherever you fish for salmon, it is a good idea to spend time reading the water before you start fishing. As we have previously made a film about, it is about getting into gear and becoming a Labrador. If you fish carefully, you will typically also learn more during your trips to the water, both in Denmark and abroad.

Sit down, look through the fly box and make a strategy for how to attack the water.

As described above, it is important to have a plan A, B and C - even if plan A works.

Preparation is important

There is nothing worse than standing by the water, feeling like you don't have the right gear or the right flies.

Therefore, ask friends, acquaintances or locals about what works in the particular river you are going to.

You can also ask us at Nordic Anglers, we have fished in many different places, and can definitely give you a few good tips and tricks.

Below you can see how Daniel became a salmon fisherman, as well as what he learned when he landed his first real salmon.
